What Are Composite Fillings?

Composite fillings are tooth-colored restorations made from BPA-free resin that bond directly to your natural tooth structure. Used to repair cavities, chips, and cracks, they are a mercury-free, single-visit solution that Dr. Tran places daily at Peninsula Dentistry in Huntington Beach.

Tooth-colored fillings that blend right in -- you won't even notice them. Composite is what we use for cavities, chips, cracks, and worn spots. It's mercury-free, matches your natural tooth color, and bonds directly to the tooth so we don't have to drill away as much healthy structure. Most fillings take one visit and you're done.

If you've still got old silver fillings from years ago, we can replace those too. A lot of our patients in Huntington Beach have been swapping them out for composite -- it looks better and there's no mercury involved.

Dr. Tran's perspective: "I stopped using amalgam years ago. Composite looks better, bonds better, and I feel better putting it in my patients' mouths. We shade-match every filling so carefully that most people can't tell where the filling ends and the tooth begins. It's one of those things where taking a few extra minutes makes all the difference."

What Are the Advantages of Composite Fillings?

Why more patients choose tooth-colored composite fillings over traditional metal restorations.

Tooth-Colored Match

Composite resin is precisely shade-matched to your natural tooth color, creating an invisible restoration.

Mercury-Free

Composite fillings contain no mercury or metals, offering a safe and biocompatible restoration option.

Bonds Directly to Tooth

Composite resin chemically bonds to the tooth, providing additional structural support and reinforcing the remaining tooth.

Less Drilling Needed

The bonding process means less healthy tooth structure needs to be removed compared to amalgam preparations.

Durable & Long-Lasting

Modern composite materials are highly durable and withstand the forces of daily chewing for many years.

Single Visit Procedure

Most composite fillings are completed in just one appointment, getting you back to your day quickly.

Simple Process

The Filling Process

A composite filling is a straightforward procedure typically completed in one comfortable visit.

01
Step 01

Examination & Diagnosis

We examine your teeth and may take X-rays to identify the extent of decay. We discuss treatment options and explain what the procedure will involve.

02
Step 02

Anesthesia

We numb the area around the affected tooth with local anesthesia to ensure you feel no pain during the procedure. Our gentle technique minimizes discomfort.

03
Step 03

Decay Removal

Using precision instruments, we carefully remove the decayed portion of the tooth while preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

04
Step 04

Composite Placement & Shaping

The tooth-colored composite resin is applied in layers, each carefully shaped to match your tooth's natural anatomy. We select a shade that perfectly matches your surrounding teeth.

05

Light Curing & Polishing

A special curing light hardens each layer of composite. Once complete, we adjust your bite, then polish the filling to a smooth, natural finish that blends perfectly with your tooth.

Treatment Eligibility

Are You a Good Candidate
for Composite Fillings?

Composite fillings work beautifully for most patients — but not every situation calls for tooth-colored resin. Dr. Tran will evaluate your tooth's size, location, and bite forces to recommend the best material for lasting results.

Ideal Candidates

1

Small to Medium Cavities

Composite bonds securely into smaller cavities and preserves more healthy tooth structure than drilling a wider pocket for amalgam.

2

Visible Front Teeth

Composite is the clear choice for front teeth — we shade-match the resin so precisely that most people can't tell a filling is there at all.

3

Mercury-Free Preference

Patients who prefer to avoid traditional silver amalgam (which contains mercury) are excellent candidates for composite resin alternatives.

4

Chipped or Cracked Front Teeth

Composite bonding repairs minor chips and cracks beautifully — often in a single appointment without removing any additional tooth structure.

5

Replacing Old Silver Fillings

Many patients choose to replace aging amalgam fillings with tooth-colored composite for a more natural appearance and a mercury-free mouth.

When Alternatives Are Better

1

Large Structural Damage

When decay has removed most of the tooth's natural crown, a dental crown provides stronger, more reliable protection than a large filling.

2

Heavy Grinding (Bruxism)

Patients with severe bruxism may wear composite down faster. We'll discuss pairing a filling with a nightguard to protect your investment.

3

Missing Teeth

When a tooth is fully lost, a filling cannot help. Dental implants or other restorative options are the appropriate solution.

4

Deeply Infected Pulp

If decay has reached the tooth's nerve, a filling alone won't solve the problem. A root canal is needed before any restoration is placed.

5

Severe Discoloration

Intrinsic staining that doesn't respond to whitening may call for porcelain veneers rather than composite bonding for a predictable, long-lasting result.

How long do composite fillings last?
Composite fillings typically last 7 to 15 years, and many of Dr. Tran's patients here in Huntington Beach get even longer out of theirs with consistent oral hygiene and regular six-month checkups. Front teeth fillings tend to last on the higher end because they experience less chewing pressure compared to molars. The size of the filling matters too — a small filling on a single surface will outlast a larger multi-surface restoration. At Peninsula Dentistry, we check every filling at each visit and can spot early signs of wear, staining, or marginal breakdown before the filling actually fails. That way we can plan a replacement on your schedule rather than dealing with an emergency. Biting forces, grinding habits, and diet all play a role, so we factor those into your personalized care plan as well.
Are composite fillings as durable as amalgam?
Modern composite materials have improved dramatically over the last two decades, and Dr. Tran has placed thousands of them at Peninsula Dentistry since the early 2000s. While traditional silver amalgam was historically considered tougher for large back-tooth fillings, today's nano-hybrid composites offer excellent strength and wear resistance that rivals amalgam in most situations. The real advantage is that composite bonds directly to your tooth structure, which actually reinforces and supports the remaining tooth rather than just sitting inside a drilled-out space. That bonding process also means we can preserve more of your healthy tooth during preparation. For our Huntington Beach patients who still have old amalgam fillings, we offer safe removal and replacement with tooth-colored composite. Most insurance plans cover the swap, and the result looks and feels much more natural.
Does insurance cover composite fillings?
Great news — most PPO dental insurance plans cover composite fillings, and our front desk team at Peninsula Dentistry verifies your specific benefits before you even sit in the chair. For front teeth, composites are almost always covered at the same rate as any filling. For back teeth, some plans cover composites fully while others reimburse at the amalgam rate, meaning you might pay a small difference out of pocket — usually around $20 to $50 per tooth. We accept Delta Dental, Aetna, Cigna, MetLife, Guardian, and most other major PPO plans here in Huntington Beach. Dr. Tran believes everyone deserves mercury-free, natural-looking restorations, so we also offer CareCredit financing and in-house payment plans if cost is a concern. We will always give you a clear breakdown before starting any work.
Is the composite filling procedure painful?
Not at all — and Dr. Tran hears this from patients at our Huntington Beach office all the time. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so the treatment area is completely numb before we begin. Most patients feel only mild pressure or slight vibration from the instruments during the actual filling process, which typically takes just 30 to 45 minutes per tooth. After the anesthesia wears off in about two to three hours, some people notice brief sensitivity to hot or cold foods for a day or two, but that resolves quickly on its own. Peninsula Dentistry uses a gentle injection technique and takes time to make sure you are fully comfortable before starting. If you are someone who gets nervous about dental work, let us know — we are happy to talk you through each step so there are no surprises.
